Building students’ financial skills

Refresher of our updated training aiming at building students’ financial skills at Enfants du Mékong. When students move to Phnom Penh and start university, money is a big challenge: it is very easy to buy things in a big with plenty of shops open 24 hour a day, coffee places everywhere and a new lifestyle. So budgeting is at the core of students’ training programme embedded in the afterschool programme offered by Enfants du Mékong to sponsored students. Other soft skills are also included in the programme, such as ethics, being careful with scams, not burdening parents with asking for additional support, understanding the impact of our decisions on others, maintaining good relationships with friends and roommates, especially when money is involved…

A few months before they graduate, students practise budgeting with a salary, and avoid spending it three times even before earning it… They learn how debts work, how to read a bank statement, and how to support their family in a sustainable way. They also budget a wedding and how to plan and choose a place to live.

Participants experienced parts of the students’ programme and practised facilitating other parts.
